PLOT

Plot summary

Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai revolves around the lives of two sisters, Jeevika (Krystal D'Souza) and Maanvi (Nia Sharma), originating fromDelhi. They move to Rishikesh after the death of their parents to live with their paternal grandmother, 'Beeji' (Anju Mahendru); uncle, Madan 'Chachu' (Mohit Chauhan); aunt, Pinky (Divyajyotee Sharma); cousin, Daboo (Gaurav Kummar) and great grandmother 'Badi Beeji' (Tarla Joshi). Jeevika and Maanvi are opposites with respect to their personalities: where Maanvi is childlike and a troublemaker, Jeevika is subtle, conservative and softspoken. Nevertheless, both sisters care for each other very much and due to their circumstances, Jeevika takes on the responsibility of raising Maanvi and protecting her from harm.
The series begins with a marriage proposal arriving for Jeevika from the Vadhera family on behalf of their eldest son, Viren (Karan Tacker), a criminal lawyer based in Chandigarh. Maanvi makes a number of attempts to break this relationship, due to a misconception that Jeevika harbours feelings for the family doctor, Dr. Manan (Abhinav Shukla); despite this, Viren and Jeevika marry and move to Chandigarh.
Maanvi visits Chandigarh on the occasion of Jeevika's birthday and whilst there helps Inder 'Chachu' (Anupam Bhattacharya) overcome his fear of his father and correct his stammer. To complete this mission she seeks assistance from Viren's brother Viraat (Kushal Tandon), and the two become friends or "partners". On seeing Viraat and Maanvi's budding friendship, Viraat's aunt, Swamini 'Bua' (Seema Kapoor) assigns Maanvi the task of mending Viraat and his ex-girlfriend Maya's (Nikunj Malik) relationship.
Meanwhile, blood tests reveal that Maanvi has leukaemia. Beeji arrives in Chandigarh and discloses to Maanvi the truth about her cancer. Maanvi instructs Beeji not to inform Jeevika about her disease, as she feels her sister will not be able to handle the news. She agrees to return to Rishikesh to begin chemotherapy only after successfully persuading Viraat that Maya has changed. However, after she leaves, the rejoined couple split and Swamini Bua is convinced that Maanvi is at fault.
With the help of Viren, Viraat realises that he is in love with Maanvi and he arrives in Rishikesh to confess to her. However, he is unable to do so as he accidentally sets Madan's shop on fire, angering Maanvi. Viren and Jeevika come to help fix the shop and a series of events leads to Jeevika suffering an accident, leaving her in requirement of a blood transfusion. When Maanvi refuses to donate her blood, Viren berates her for her actions, as she is unable to tell him about her cancer, and he airlifts Jeevika back to Chandigarh. A distraught Maanvi reveals the truth to Viraat and after her second chemotherapy session, he takes her to meet Jeevika. An argument between Viraat and Viren causes the truth to to revealed to the Vadheras, who repent their treatment of Maanvi. Viren's sudden change in behaviour makes Jeevika suspicious, and on Maanvi's birthday finally she finally finds out the truth.
Jeevika commands her sister to stay and continue her treatment in Chandigarh, but takes Maanvi to Mumbai on the recommendation of Viraat, so that Maanvi can trial a new treatment at the clinic of Viraat's friend Dr. Seema (Shraddha Musale). The new treatment involves injections into Maanvi's spine, so Jeevika stays with her in the operating theatre, due to Maanvi's fear of needles. During the procedure, Jeevika cannot bear seeing Maanvi in pain so Viraat steps in to support Maanvi. This event leads to Maanvi realising her love for Viraat. The cancer specialist informs Viraat that the treatment is unsuitable for Maanvi and that her health is declining.Hence, they return to Chandigarh: Maanvi to her previous chemotherapy.
After her third session, Maanvi loses a significant amount of hair and decides to shave her head. She isolates herself from the others, especially Viraat, due to worry about her appearance. To offer Maanvi moral support, Viraat shaves his head. On enquiry of his actions by Swamini Bua, he confesses that he loves Maanvi, leaving Maanvi shocked. She returns to Rishikesh in anger, followed by Viraat. He manages to win over Maanvi's family and eventually Maanvi too confesses her love for Viraat.
Meanwhile in Chandigarh, Viren meets Rajiv Talwar (Abir Goswami), an ex-classmate of his mother, Vanshika (Indu Verma). He discovers that Rajiv still loves Vanshika, and Viren discusses their possible marriage, however she refuses. Jeevika also discovers that she is pregnant.
Jeevika now fully supports Maanvi and Viraat's relationship and along with Viren, manages to convince 'Dadaji' (Deep Dhillon) and the rest of the family for their marriage. Whilst preparations are underway, it is discovered that Maanvi's cancer is incurable. Another specialist is consulted, Dr. Mehra (Mihir Mishra)who informs them that a bone marrow transplant is the only way to save her life. Jeevika cannot donate her bone marrow due to her pregnancy. She now stuggles with choosing Maanvi, or her unborn baby. They find a donor, but it is revealed that Maanvi's blood cells are killing the donor's blood cells, meaning that if he puts his bone marrow in Maanvi's body, Maanvi will die. The doctor tells them that it is very very rare to find a full 6 on 6 match for the bone marrow for Maanvi's blood type, and it's found in only sibling's body. Finding it somewhere else is nearly impossible. Jeevika finally decides to get an abortion to give bone marrow to Maanvi. She tells Viren, and at first he freaks out and won't talk to Jeevika, but then he realizes that it must be done, and he goes to tell Jeevika that he agrees. Maanvi overhears this and gets extremely angry and won't talk to Jeevika, until she takes back her decision. The next day, Jeevika and Viren tell the entire family what they are about to do, and the entire family disagrees with them, saying that aborting the child is not right. However, Viren and Jeevika don't listen to anybody. Maanvi asks Inder to be her lawyer, because he wants to fight a case in court against Jeevika. Before Jeevika and Viren leave the next day for her abortion, she presents the papers in front of them. They then go to court, and although Viren and Jeevika are most likely to win, they still finish the court case, because they don't' want Maanvi to be mad at them. They lie and say they won't abort the baby, and everyone believes them. Then at night, Jeevika and Viren go for Jeevika's surgery for abortion secretly. Jeevika loses her baby and is very sad about it. However, the two of them continue, and a few days later go to get Jeevika's bone marrow extracted. Viraat goes to the hospital to get Maanvi's medicine, and sees the two of them there, in the special ward. He finds out what they did, and promises not to tell anybody else. He is very heartbroken
